About the text

Can You See Me? follows twelve-year-old Tally, who has recently been diagnosed with autism. It's her first year at Kingswood Academy, where she's starting sixth grade. However, something feels different about sixth grade. She's got a new, scratchy uniform and has to attend classes without her best friends. She's never felt ashamed of being autistic, but now she feels like she needs to hide her true self and behave "normal". Even her best friend Layla, who knows about her diagnosis, has started acting uncomfortable around Tally. As the year progresses, Tally starts to wonder what the meaning of "normal" really is and whether it's worth it to suppress her true self.

The novel is inspired by the real-life experiences of the co-author, Libby Scott, who was eleven years old at the time of writing. It is told via a mixture of diary entries and prose.

Libby talks about how her writing went viral!
