Published in 1911, this classic children's novel follows 10-year-old Mary Lennox, a spoiled, disagreeable and lonely child who grew up in India. Recently orphaned, she has now come to live with her reclusive uncle at his manor in Yorkshire, England. At first, Mary dislikes the manor, the cold moor, and the people living there. However, when she discovers a garden, locked away and hidden, she decides to bring the garden back to life. Along the way, she enlists the help of Colin, her sickly cousin, and Dickon, the gardener's son. The Secret Garden is a tale about healing, friendship, and nature.
Frances Hodgson Burnett (24 November 1849 – 29 October 1924) was a British-American author and playwright. She was born in England. However, her father died when she was only four years of age, leaving the family with strained finances. In 1865 her family emigrated to the Tennessee in the United States, where her maternal uncle had promised to support them, however, this support never materialised. She started writing to earn money for her family when she was 19 years old, submitting stories to magazines for publication. This included both short stories and serialised fiction. Several of her novels were first published in a serialised format.
Burnett received her greatest success when she published children's novel Little Lord Fauntleroy in 1886. In 1888 she won a lawsuit for the dramatic rights of the property, establishing a precedent that would be incorporated into British law in 1911. Her later children's stories The Little Princess and The Secret Garden remain popular to this day.
