Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief, originally published in 2005, is a middle grade novel inspired by Greek mythology.
12-year-old Percy Jackson's world is turned upside down when he's attacked by a Fury, a monster from Ancient Greek myth, and discovers that not all is what it seems. Percy is actually a demigod - the child of a mortal human and a god. He's also in big trouble, because Zeus believes that he has something to do with the disappearance of his lightning bolt, and Hades has stolen away his mother. Percy makes it to Camp Halfblood, a refuge for demigods like him, where he meets Annabeth, a demigod daughter of Athena. Percy, Annabeth and his best friend Grover must embark on a cross-country quest in order to reclaim Zeus' lightning bolt, clear Percy's name, and save his mother.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is the first of five books in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It is followed by sequel series The Heroes of Olympus. It has been adapted for theatrical release and as a Disney+ television series.
